Dundalk U10 played their first ever Metro League match on Sunday and had the pleasure of hosting one of Dublin’s and Irelands most famous rugby clubs, St.Marys. The game was played in fantastic sunshine and a firm pitch which led to a very open and free flowing game. The first half saw Dundalk start strongly especially through the forwards, Donal Leavy, Cian Herr and Arlen Donnelly who made the hard yards through some great carrying and direct running lines. It was one of these forward carries which led to the first try scored by Liam O’Donnell, scrum half Daniel Chong quickly broke from a ruck and quick hands across the back line led to the ball passing to Liam who dived over to score.
The next score came from a line out in the Marys half, Daniel Chong quickly passed from the lineout and this enabled Donal Leavy to break the line to score his first try. Donal then scored another try from a scrum inside the Marys half with a great solo run to make the score 3-0 at half time .
At the start of the second half Marys started strongly and made a number of breaks over the Dundalk 22 and it was from one of these breaks Marys scored an excellent try in the corner. Dundalk decided to keep things tight and work position through the forwards created more pressure and eventually this paid dividends when Charlie Murdoch scored. With time running out Marys applied more pressure down the flanks and this led to a final try to end the first game 4-2 in Dundalks favour.
To take advantage of the great day a second match for 10 mins was played , a quick move along the backs from a scrum led to James McDonnell feeding James OConnell who finished well . Marys to their credit put Dundalk under more pressure and scored the final try of the day to leave the final score 5-3 to Dundalk. The day ended with a two team photo and many new friends made with St Marys . The Dundalk U10 squad on the day was as follow : Ruairi O’Connor, PJ Tiernan , Charlie Murdoch, Donal Leavy, Liam O’Donnell, Cian Herr, Niall Birmingham, Daniel Chong, James McDonnell, Arlen Donnelly, James O’Connell, Aaron Crawford , James McArdle, Caolan Reddy, Tadgh Cunningham,Tom Corcoran and Conor Connolly.
